Learning Theme: The Business of Staying in Business

Students explore and experience the role of innovation in today’s businesses and discover how they can harness their own power to become an Innovation leader for the Central Coast community and businesses. 

Introduction

As part of the Learning Theme: The Business of Staying in Business, students will explore Innovation as an essential area that contributes to the long-term success and resilience of any business.

This lesson sequence also encourages entrepreneurial thinking, giving students the opportunity, through the lens of a leading Central Coast technology company, to apply their innovative technology to solve a community, Central Coast challenge which they would like to see solved.

Summary - Innovation

Innovation is the key to business survival and long-term success.

In this lesson sequence, students will explore how businesses develop new products, services, and processes to stay competitive and adapt to changing markets and emerging technologies.

Through a real-world case studies, students will examine how businesses on the Central Coast are driving innovation, from startups disrupting industries to established businesses adopting new technologies. They will also analyse barriers to innovation and propose strategies to foster creativity, problem-solving, and business growth.

Students will be challenged to think and apply innovatively to a real-world problem or opportunity for the Central Coast .

Lesson Sequence

  • Context – Short video/lesson introducing 4ID and exploring the role of innovation in business success.
  • Challenge – Students presented a business, industry or Government (business) sector facing challenges or opportunities for innovation.
  • Investigation – Students research how the business could develop and implement innovative strategy.
  • Generalisation – Students develop and present an innovation proposal, showcasing how a new product, service, or business model could address a real-world challenge or opportunity.
  • Reflection – Students connect their learning to career pathways in entrepreneurship, business strategy, and emerging industries.

  • Business/Commerce – Entrepreneurship, business growth strategies, competitive advantage.
  • HSIE (Economics & Society & Culture) – The role of innovation in economic development.
